Baringa congratulates Vattenfall on funding for first hydrogen-producing offshore turbine

24 May 2022

Baringa congratulate Vattenfall on being awarded £9.3m innovation funding from the UK Government to develop the world’s first hydrogen-producing offshore wind turbine at scale.

Baringa are delighted that Vattenfall have been successful in securing innovation funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Hydrogen Supply 2 competition. The funding comes from the Government’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio and will be used to develop the Hydrogen Turbine 1 (HT1) project in Aberdeen.

The project will involve the retrofit of an existing 8.8 MW offshore turbine at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, with green hydrogen piped to shore, with operations aiming to commence from 2025.

Baringa’s role on the project included advice, bid writing, and project management in support of the project’s bid in the Hydrogen Supply 2 competition.

Ed C Eyre, Partner – Energy & Resources at Baringa Partners said “We are absolutely delighted to have worked closely with Vattenfall to deliver this winning bid. The HT1 project will be a key milestone for the global hydrogen industry, as well as supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions. Combining offshore wind with hydrogen has an exciting future in the UK and around the world.”

Max Meijer, Head of Bids at Vattenfall said – “The government support that our project has received will help to support the development of fossil-free hydrogen at scale. Baringa has been a trusted part of our bid strategy team and played a key role in helping us achieve a successful outcome in the Hydrogen Supply 2 competition.”

The 8.8MW Hydrogen Turbine 1 will be a world-first demonstration combining green hydrogen production with wind at scale. Hydrogen production equipment will be integrated at turbine level, including electrolysis, desalination, and associated balance of plant.

100% of turbine output will be dedicated to hydrogen production, testing an ‘islanded’ mode of operations where the electrolyser does not require electricity from the grid. The deep integration of hydrogen production at turbine level is believed by Vattenfall to provide the lowest cost hydrogen at scale in the long term, replacing the need for electricity transmission to shore with more cost-effective gas pipelines.
