In detail:
After completing a degree in geology, Duncan initially steered away from a career in the energy industry and joined a large consultancy, working on financial services projects. He then spotted an opportunity to work with a small energy consultancy in Cambridge and to rekindle his passion for energy and the environment. He joined during an exciting time for the industry - a period of liberalisation and privatisation. Later, in 2004, with two partners, he founded Redpoint Energy, a niche energy advisory business specialising in strategy, investment and market design. Working side-by-side with Baringa on many client projects, the two companies merged in 2012 and Duncan now leads our energy policy and regulation practice.
Duncan’s passion is energy market design. His role is to help governments, regulators and energy market participants to design the energy system of the future, and to deliver net zero commitments efficiently and cost-effectively. Most paths to net zero involve the use of much more electricity, creating daunting challenges across engineering, infrastructure, networks, markets, regulations, and commerce. Duncan helps stakeholders in this space to design the right incentives for both investors - to unlock capital for crucial infrastructure spending, and consumers - to encourage energy usage patterns that don’t overburden energy networks.
After three decades in the industry, Duncan is a deep market expert who loves helping clients to define strategies to tackle their most complex energy challenges. He thrives on interrogating the consensus view and looking for new angles. He’s not afraid to challenge clients to further not only their understanding of the intricacies of the market and its inputs, but his own too. Despite the huge challenges facing the industry and the planet, Duncan believes his most exciting and impactful work is ahead of him. He is currently supporting the UK Government on various aspects of energy policy, and is working internationally in areas such as offshore wind, and development of decentralised energy markets.
As a father of teenagers, weekends are often spent standing on the touchline, or filling in as a driving instructor. In quieter moments, he enjoys fly fishing and tries to cycle and play tennis whenever he has the chance. He also dabbles with playing the piano but wishes he could play as well as his children.
